- This two-mile-long tunnel at Fermilab houses the Main Injector particle accelerator and the Recycler particle storage ring. Permanent magnets (green) steer protons around the storage ring before they are transferred to the accelerator (blue and red) and accelerated close to the speed of light. The protons are then sent to various physics experiments as well as the Fermilab Test Beam Facility.
