Great Tools for Science and Industry - Particle accelerators are very useful tools. More than 30,000 are in operation around the world. They all use electric fields to accelerate charged particles. In a linear accelerator (top), particles speed up as they travel through a series of units powered by alternating electric fields. In a synchrotron (bottom), magnetic fields force particles to travel in a circle. With each lap the particles receive a boost as they travel through a unit with an electric field.
